Trout Nymphs
What serious Trout fisherman doesn't have a great supply of Nymphs? While there are plenty great, tried and true patterns I fish all the time. The Prince, Copper John, Flashback PT to name a few. Over the years I have added a few "specialty" patterns to the mix and would like to share them with you.
The Woven Series
Stonefly
Mayfly
Caddis Larva
I have always been intrigued by the beauty of woven flies. There is just something about the two tone, interlocked colors that appeal to me. I believe it is that two toned color combination that makes these flies so effective. Available in Stonefly, Mayfly, and Caddis Larva configurations these woven flies will make your Nymph box the envy of your fishing buddies. Popular colors are Brown / Yellow, but I have tied these in about every color combination you can think of. Pick up a few of these woven patterns and give them a shot, you will be happy you did.
The PFN
The idea of Pheasant Tail Nymphs with a "hot" thorax is by no means a new concept. Although the color combo of this fly happens to be the same combination of my favorite hockey team, The Philadelphia Flyers (PFN = Philadelphia Flyers Nymph) the choice of colors goes much deeper than that. Everybody has their favorite color for trout. Read any Charlie Meck book and you will quickly realize Mr Meck is quite fond of blue. Well, I feel the same way about orange. Trout seem to key in on orange and that is why I chose Senyo's laser dub in orange for the thorax of this fly. The black wing case was chosen to make the wing case "pop" against the thorax and to simulate the darkening of the nymphs wing case prior to it emerging. At home on a wild river and deadly on stocked fish (especially Rainbows) this nymph is sure to become a go to.
O'Neills Hare n copper
I developed this pattern to mimic the larger burrowing nymphs we sometimes encounter. I really like the way the copper bead and wire contrast with the Hares Ear #1 dubbing. Trout Smallmouth and Steelhead have all fallen prey to this pattern. Tied on a TMC 5262 hook, angry Steelhead can gnaw on this guy forever! This Nymph encompasses the largest size range as I carry these in #18 thru #10. Rubber legs on the #10 and #12 version, dubbing legs on the rest. A lead wrapped underbody make this a perfect anchor pattern in a multiple nymph rig.
